Redbridge Grammar Schools
Ilford County High School for Boys
Open Evening for Prospective Pupils and Parents
We hold an Open Evening in September each year at which there is an opportunity for prospective pupils and their parents to meet staff and ICHS pupils, visit departments and tour the school. There is a talk in the school hall regarding life at Ilford County High School and the prospectus is available on that evening.
Entry Tests
Places are allocated at Ilford County High School using the results of tests organised by the London Borough of Redbridge. There are 120 places available in Year 7. Arrangements are made for children to sit the grammar school tests on two weekends, usually in December and January. Once Redbridge’s Admissions Team have processed your application form, they will write to you to tell you the date, time and place of your son’s test, and other important information.
The Catchment Area
For your child to be eligible to sit the tests you must reside within the catchment area. This includes all Redbridge residents and those who live in some of the adjacent areas. A map of the School’s catchment area is included in the ‘Transfer to Secondary Schools’ booklet which published each year in the summer term and is available from The London Borough of Redbridge Education Services, Admissions and Awards Team on 020 8708 3140 or 3149.
If parents live outside the catchment area, consideration for a place will be given after all the requests from those within the catchment area have been met.
How to Apply for a Place at ICHS
Redbridge Residents: All parents of children resident in Redbridge who wish their sons to be entered for the selection test must include Ilford County High School on the application form which is in the ‘Transfer to Secondary School’ Booklet. The application form must then be returned by the deadline to:

Non-Redbridge Residents: If you are not resident in Redbridge but live within the School’s catchment area you must apply for admission to Ilford County High School to the London Borough in which you pay your council tax.
Notification of a Place
The London Borough of Redbridge will send letters to parents with a single offer of a secondary school, including the outcome of the grammar school selection tests on 1st March each year.
Woodford County High School for Girls
· Places are allocated at Woodford County High School for girls using the results of tests taken by the pupils. There are 120 places available and sometimes up to 1000 applications. The standard of the tests is very high. Please make sure that you are confident that your child has the ability to take the tests. If you are not sure about your child’s ability, please talk to your child’s Headteacher or class teacher who can advise you. Even if your child’s school thinks your child has the ability to take the test, this does not guarantee that a place will be offered.
· If you would like your child to be considered for the grammar school you must name the school on your common application form along with any other schools you would like and return it to your local authority by the deadline. It is because of how the ranking works that if a parent wants their child to be considered for a grammar school place, it is strongly recommended that you name the grammar school as first priority. It is very important that you consider the admissions criteria when applying for and ranking the schools.
· If you have named Woodford County High School on the common application form, you will also need to complete a supplementary information form and send it to the Admissions Office at the Lynton House address together with a copy of your child’s full birth certificate and three proofs of residence as indicated on the form. (The supplementary form is in the Redbridge booklet or may be obtained from the Redbridge Admissions Office or from the school on the Open Evening).
· Places are given to children living in the common catchment area and who score within the top 120 marks in the tests and, unless you have been offered a school that is ranked as a higher named school on your application form, a place will be offered at the grammar school.
· There are two weekends arranged for testing (December and January). The Admissions Office will write to you shortly before the test dates to tell you the date and time of your child’s test, the place where you have to bring your child, and other important information.
The first test, in December, will be a non-verbal reasoning multiple-choice test. The second test, in January, will be a verbal reasoning multiple-choice test.
The tests are meant to test your child’s natural ability. All candidates are given practice tests. You do not have to prepare your child for them and you cannot get past copies of the tests that are used.
· All results will be posted out to parents on the first working day in March. The remaining children who have not been offered a higher preference school, will remain on the waiting list in their total standardised score order and then, in cases where more than one candidate achieves the same total score, the tiebreak will be the shortest measured reasonable walking route using public roads and footpaths, from the child’s home to the main entrance of the school, as measured by a GIS.
· For more information regarding admission and a map of the common catchment area, please refer to your Redbridge Transfer to Secondary School Booklet, or contact the Admissions Office, London Borough of Redbridge, Lynton House, 255 – 259 High Road, Ilford, Essex IG1 1NN.
