Children born between 01 September 1998 and 31 August 1999 will transfer to secondary school in September 2010.
The application process begins in September 2009 when your child starts Year 6.
A Common Application Form (CAF) will be issued to you by the Local Authority where you live. You can only make one application either on this paper form, or online. You can list up to six secondary schools, whether the schools are in your home borough or elsewhere.
The school you put as your 1st preference should be the one you want the most. However, you should also include a school that has always covered your address on proximity, even as the last preference in case none of your more preferred schools can make you an offer.

Applying for Secondary School 2010

Pupils living in the London Borough of Bromley and attending a Bromley maintained primary or junior school will automatically be issued with a personalised CAF at their school in September 2009. If you do not live in the London Borough of Bromley you must obtain a CAF from your home borough, or apply online via your home borough’s website.
Pupils living in the Bromley borough attending schools outside the Local Authority or in the independent sector must contact the Bromley Admissions Team as soon as possible to register for a CAF. Documents to prove residency and parental responsibility will be required.

If your child has a Statement of Special Needs you should contact your caseworker in the Special Educational Needs Department for advice. Please do not complete a CAF or apply online.
Selective and denominational (church) schools may also require a completed Supplementary Information Form (SIF). These are available from the relevant schools and should be returned back to them by the specified closing date. In Bromley these schools are: Newstead Wood School for Girls, St Olave’s School for Boys, Bishop Justus Church of England School and Coopers Technology College. These schools must also be listed on your main application as a SIF will not be considered on its own.
Selective tests for Newstead Wood School for Girls and St Olave’s school for Boys take place on Saturday, 14 November.
The banding test for Coopers Technology College takes place on Saturday, 28 November.

Bexley and Kent selection tests – Parent/carers must pre-register for testing direct to Bexley and/or Kent:
Bexley – Last date for registration is Friday, 17 July 2009. Bexley will not accept late applications. Tests take place on 22 and 23 September. Parent/carers will be advised of their child’s results in a letter sent 1st class on 14 October 2009. Further information
and registration forms available from Bexley admissions 020 8294 6416 (email customer.services@bexley.gov.uk).
Kent – Closing date for registration is Friday, 10 July 2009. Late applications will not be accepted. Tests take place on 19 September. Parent/carers will be advised of their child’s results in a letter sent 1st class on 19 October 2009. Further information and registration forms available from Kent admissions 01622 696 565 (www.kent.gov.uk/ola).

Completing your application

Bromley residents already issued with a personalised CAF may alternatively apply online from September 2009 at www.bromley.gov.uk. Log on to access an extended link to more information and school websites. If you don’t have access to the internet at home or work, you can book free access at any Bromley library. Applying online is quick, safe and secure.
Your application will be acknowledged, and you can view and amend the details until the deadline (midnight on Friday, 23 October 2009).
All schools you would like your child to be considered for, whether in Bromley or not, must be listed on your application. This includes selective schools but not independent fee-paying schools which should be applied to direct and not listed on your Bromley application.
You can list up to six schools on your application – in order of preference. The school you want the most must be preference 1. Schools will not be told which preference number they are or given any details about other schools you are applying for.
All Bromley schools (except selective and denominational) offer places using the same admissions criteria: First to Children in Public Care, then to siblings and finally by proximity (straight line distance measured from home to school).
Applicants are strongly advised to include a school that has always covered their home address – even if it is preference 6. Distances reached in recent years by Bromley secondary school proximity offers will be included in the Moving on to Secondary School in Bromley
2010 booklet available in September 2009.
Preferences cannot be changed after the closing date on 23 October 2009.
Do your research – read the secondary transfer booklets published by the Local Authority your preferred schools are situated in, read individual schools’ prospectus and websites and attend school open events.
Be realistic when deciding which school/s to apply to. You are strongly advised to include in your application a school that has always reached your address.
All Bromley schools will receive more applications than they have places and may not be able to offer to all who apply.

Newstead Woods School for Girls

Entry to the school at 11+

Those who wish to be considered for a place will be required to sit tests in Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning on Saturday 15th November 2008 at the school.  The results of the tests will be will be notified to parents and to Bromley LEA.  Offers will be posted to parents at the beginning of March 2009 from your LEA.
You can use BOFA 11+ to help prepare for the exam:
If your daughter has a chronic medical condition, disability or a Special Educational Need which will require special arrangements to be made for her during the tests, please let the school have full details when returning the Supplementary Information Form.
If your daughter is unwell on the day of the test so that you feel the test results will be affected, you should not let her sit the test as no allowance can be made for under-performance.  If your daughter is unable to attend, please inform the Headteacher in person and in writing prior to the test.  Girls whose parents provide written medical evidence relevant to the date of the test will be able to sit it on a date to be arranged.
If a girl is taken ill during the test, it will be the decision of the Headteacher whether she may stop.  In these circumstances, girls whose parents provide written medical evidence relevant to the date of the test will be able to complete the test on a date to be arranged.
Under-age candidates who are not successful in obtaining a place will not be able to re-sit the test the following year.  Candidates may only sit the selective test once.
The test will be taken in two sessions, at 8:30 am and at 11:00 am.  If you have a good reason to require a specific time for your daughter to take the test, a preference must be expressed when the Supplementary Information Form is submitted.  Once you have been advised of the test time, it cannot be altered.
After places have been accepted, it is the Governors' intention to co-operate with other secondary schools in the area and with the LEA to ensure that students do not hold more than one place.
There were 717 applications in 2007 and 708 sat the test.

Open Day

Prospective parents and their daughters are invited to visit the school on Saturday 27th September 2008 when the Head Teacher and Staff are available for discussion and our present students will be delighted to show visitors around the school between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm.
There will be talks by the Head Teacher at 9:45 am, 10:30 am, 11.15 am and 12.00 noon.
Parents of students offered places can request the opportunity to see round the school during the normal working day.  This will play no part in the selection process and is merely to help prospective parents and students.

Application Process

You must complete your LEA’s Common Application Form, placing Newstead Wood School for Girls as one of your preferences.  Your CAF must be returned to your own LEA by 24th October 2008.
You must also complete Newstead’s Supplementary Information Form.  This must be returned to Newstead Wood School by 24th October 2008 to be considered for the test on 15th November.  You are advised to return the Supplementary Information Form to Newstead by hand.  If you choose to post your SIF, then you are advised to use the Guaranteed Delivery Service (proof of posting is not accepted).  Forms received after 24th October will be held until the Reserve Test date in January 2009.
Faxed and e-mailed Supplementary Information Forms will not be accepted.

Parents whose daughters are unsuccessful in obtaining a place may have their application reconsidered by the Appeals Committee.  Written appeals should be sent to the school to be received no later than Friday 27th March 2009.
Parents should outline clearly their reason for making the appeal, may attend the appeals meeting accompanied by a friend, if they wish, or may be represented.  Appeals on health grounds must be supported by written medical evidence.

Those whose parents wish them to be considered for a place will be required to sit tests designed to assess candidates’ suitability for an academic education. The testing will be competitive, and the first one hundred and sixteen in rank order will be offered places. In the event of aggregate test scores being tied on the final place(s) in the rank order, candidates will be offered places on the basis of scores on the mathematics test.
