South Wilts Grammar School for Girls

South Wilts is a Selective Grammar School for girls, with responsibility for setting its own testing and admission requirements. Parents of girls from any area within reasonable travelling distance of the School may apply for admission to the School. Click here to see a map of the School's designated area.

Five Open Afternoons will take place at the end of September, when staff will be available to answer questions, and tours of the School by pupils will be organised. The Open Afternoons begin at 2pm with an introductory talk (see Open Days page for further information). Although these afternoons are mainly dedicated to entry into Year 7, those interested in entry into Years 8 and 9 are also welcome to attend. The open afternoons begin at 2pm with an introductory talk on:

Monday 21st September 2009
Tuesday 22nd September 2009
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
Thursday 24th September 2009
Friday 25th September 2009

Application for admission into Year 7 involves two stages. Firstly, an application form must be sent to your Local Authority (LA). Secondly, a separate and different application form must be sent to SWGS. This Supplementary Form can be obtained by contacting the school directly. The deadline for the SWGS Supplementary Form is 16th October 2009

The two-stage application process

1. Application via your Local Authority

  • Parents of girls living in Wiltshire, should obtain the WC Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) from their child's primary school, or direct from WC County Hall at Trowbridge, or apply online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk where there is a link from the Home Page. Candidates from other counties should apply via their own County's SCAF. Their County Council will then inform WC of a candidate's preference for SWGS.
  • Parents should include South Wilts Grammar School (SWGS) as one of their named preferences on the SCAF and return this Form to their local LA by the appropriate deadline. The deadline for residents in Wiltshire is 16th October 2009 and the deadline for residents in Hampshire and Dorset is 23rd October 2009.

2. Application directly to SWGS

  • In addition, the school's Supplementary Application Form should be completed and returned to SWGS by 16th October 2009 This gives evidence for the application of our oversubscription criteria.
  • From 1st September, you can obtain a Supplementary Application Form for SWGS with a prospectus. To do so, please contact the school directly on 01722 323326 or via email to head@swgs.wilts.sch.uk

What happens next ?

  • Parents who have listed SWGS as one of their named preferences on the SCAF will receive details of the test arrangements approximately one week before the exam. The test will be held on the morning of Saturday 21st November 2009.
  • It is important that parents understand that the system of allocation of school places by the LA will mean that if, after applying the admissions criteria, a child appears on the eligible list of their first preference school, then this is the place that will be allocated. A candidate with South Wilts Grammar School as a second or third preference, even if they are deemed suitable for a grammar school education, would not be allocated a place at SWGS on 1st March 2010 if they are eligible for a school for which they have indicated a higher preference on the SCAF. Parents should contact their LA if they are unclear about the preference system.
  • If a child has a current statement of educational needs, speaks English as a Second Language or faces any other barrier to learning, whether medical or educational (eg Specific learning difficulties), or parents feel their daughter's circumstances may affect her performance in the test, they can request that special consideration be given to her. Parents must complete the yellow Special Access arrangements form and return it with written evidence to the School by 1st October 2009 (Please see the Information Leaflet for Parents on 11+ Selection available below for full details).
