You can now register online here.

Choosing a school for your child is an important decision and the 11 plus exam (11+) will play a part in your choice of school. Grammar schools in the Medway Council area cater for children who are deemed selective under the Medway tests.

Medway council provide an excellent booklet of advice for the parents of children who are about to sit their elevenplusexam. The booklet contains a wealth of information about selective and non-selective schools in their council area.

For entry to secondary school or grammar school in September of the following school year children will usually sit their 11 plus exam in the spring term of their last primary school year- often in January

Children may take the following eleven plus tests:

  1. Extended writing exercise
  2. Verbal reasoning test
  3. Mathematics test

The tests are marked, the scores standardised and results issued.

Approximately 25% of pupils will transfer to grammar school.

Transferring from primary to secondary school is an important step and Medway Council wants to help parents by giving them clear information about the transfer process and about Medway Council schools. Children normally transfer to secondary school in the September after their 11th birthday.

Each secondary school produces its own prospectus which contains detailed information about the school, how it is run and what is taught. These prospectuses are available from schools themselves. Schools also run open days and evenings where parents will be able to take a closer look at the school, meet pupils and staff, and ask questions. Parents can visit as many schools as they like to help them make up their minds about which school they would prefer for their child. Schools want to work in partnership with parents and will welcome enquiries.

The admissions process for secondary schools starts early in Term 1 of Year 6 at primary school. The council provides parents with a description of the process, details of each of the secondary schools and information on how to make their preferences known in the 2010 Admission to Secondary School Guide (pdf 2,621KB).

The guide and forms are also available from the Admissions Team, which can be contacted using the details at the foot of this page.

The Co-ordinated Secondary Admission Scheme (pdf 35KB) for secondary schools sets out how to apply for a secondary school place and the timetable for selection tests, applications and receiving an offer of a school place in 2010.

The admission arrangements for secondary schools set out how many places are available at each of these schools and the way in which places will be allocated if there are more parents seeking a place than available places at a particular school – the over-subscription criteria.

Community and voluntary controlled secondary schools

Medway Council is the admissions authority for community and voluntary controlled schools. The admissions arrangements are the same for each of these schools. A copy of the 2010 arrangements and over-subscription criteria are available here:

Community and Voluntary Controlled Secondary Admission Arrangements (pdf 29KB)

Foundation and voluntary aided secondary schools

The governing body of each voluntary aided primary school is the admissions authority. Each school has its own arrangements for 2010 admission. Some schools will need a supplementary form to be completed.
